Teacher Biography

4th Grade
Vanessa Yelenic

Hello Our Lady of Peace family! My name is Vanessa Yelenic, and this will be my fifth year at OLP.  I feel truly blessed to be able to teach within a Catholic School and have the opportunity to share my faith with the students every day. The Catholic Faith has always been an important part of my life, as well as education. This is why I made the decision to attend Wheeling Jesuit University where I earned a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education. I am also certified in West Virginia for grades K to 6.

In my classroom, I promote laughter as well as discipline. A positive learning environment is crucial for students to thrive and grow.  Not all children learn the same way. This is why I design my lessons to fit my students’ needs.

“Educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all.” ~ Aristotle

Summer Reading & Math Work

4th Grade Summer Reading

During the summer months, all incoming 4th grade students are required to read two (2) chapter

books. One will be required for all students to read and students will be tested on this book within the first couple weeks of school. Attached to this page are guided reading questions the students will need to complete on the required book. This will be recorded as the first reading grade for the year.

The required book is The World According to Humphrey by Betty G. Birney.

Your child will be able to choose the other book (Fiction or Non-Fiction), but it should be one that they have not already read. Books read with Mrs. Allman in third grade will not be accepted. The books, Frindle, Because of Winn-Dixie, and The Mouse and the Motorcycle are all books read during the 4th grade year and will not be accepted as the second book required. Reading during the summer is to keep the mind stimulated during our months off from school. Scholastic website has many great titles. There is also a list of fiction and non-fiction titles on this webpage. A Summer Book  Report Form must be filled out for the chosen book and turned in on the first day of school.

Summer Math Packet

Your student will also complete summer math work. These worksheets are skills that should be reviewed so your child does not fall behind during our first few weeks of school. In 4th grade the multiplication facts are the most crucial skill they must know, as well as the basic addition and subtraction skills. Practicing these skills daily will ensure your child’s success in 4th grade. The worksheets can be found below. Please complete and return on the first day of school in August.

Thank you.
